Total Acre® Grower Sets New Soybean Yield World Record

Smithville, Georgia (August 24, 2023) – In a classic case of the student surpassing the teacher, Total Acre grower Alex Harrell of Smithville, GA has bested the current soybean yield record holder, Randy Dowdy. Harrell has established a new world soybean yield record at an astonishing 206.7997 bu/ac.

With a goal of raising 200 bu/ac, Harrell was looking to push his field’s potential. And with the help of his crop consultant, Caleb Traugh, he did that and more. They formulated the perfect plan and executed it to perfection, making only a few alterations when tissue samples revealed specific nutrient demands.

Harrell called it a testament to the Total Acre grower camps led by Randy Dowdy and David Hula and their pay-it-forward approach to crop production strategies.

“Randy Dowdy truly set the bar and gave me something to chase,” said Harrell. “He made me realize that it was possible to achieve record yields here in Georgia.”

Harrell and his father strive to make the most of their acres using learnings from Total Acre camps. To pair population and variety, they planted AG 48X9 coated in their standard practice seed treatment with the addition of BRANDT Seed Zone® Zn. They planted on 30” row width. Despite their prayers for good weather, the Harrell farm received a packing rain shortly after planting, resulting in a final stand of 77,000. Mother Nature threw another setback at the crop with a 10-day flooding rain in early June. From there, the crop saw ideal weather the rest of the way.

As the season progressed, Harrell realized the potential of his crop. Initially predicting at least 150 bu/ac soybeans, the Georgia farmer began to understand the crop’s potential after he desiccated it and saw pod load and bean size. Still uncertain he would best Dowdy’s yield record of 191 bu/ac, Harrell knew he had something special. After celebrating his record with his father, Harrell said he wanted his first phone call to be to Randy Dowdy to share the news personally.

"Randy Dowdy and I would like to congratulate Alex on breaking the milestone of 200 bu/ac for soybeans,” said David Hula. “Alex represents a portion of the Total Acre members who are not only focused on ROI but are also driven to push yields to the limit."

In today’s world of high input costs, finding out what works in your area and conditions is crucial to reducing your spend and ensuring ROI. World record holders Randy Dowdy and David Hula will discuss benefits and best practices of conducting on-farm trials – one of the main methods for them learning what products and practices increase yield and ROI on their own farms.

Crop Life: Total Acre Grower Clinic Set for January in Arizona

Thanks to the folks at Crop Life for the following write-up on our Grower Clinic happening later this month!

World-record-holding crop farmers Randy Dowdy and David Hula will share cutting-edge crop production insights at the annual Total Acre Grower Clinic, Jan. 23-26, in Phoenix. During the clinic, expert panelists, top researchers, and live field demonstrations will offer production measures Total Acre members can implement on their own farms, all presented under the warmth of Arizona’s mid-winter sunshine.

“This clinic is a tangible benefit for our Total Acre farmers to come together to learn how they can increase ROI by optimizing yields as they celebrate achievements of the past growing season and set their sights on 2023,” said Hula, who holds the world record corn yield of 616 bushels per acre. “While our focus is on learning from experts, it’s also an opportunity for elite growers from different states and regions to network and come together as a singular community and to learn from each other.”

The clinic offers a comprehensive mix of in-the-field demonstrations and interactive seminars designed for optimizing production and revenue for every acre. It will be a gathering of 500 of the world’s best crop growers, including Hula and Dowdy, for three full days of intensive learning, engagement and fellowship.

“There are so many ways to unlock the true productivity of your farm,” said Dowdy, who holds the world record soybean yield of 190.23 bushels per acre. “I encourage farmers to not be a ‘next year’ farmer. Stop hoping and start knowing. By being proactive, we can increase our returns on investment by working with and caring for our soil to optimize yields on every acre.”

Registration for the event is included in Total Acre membership. In addition to corn, soybean and small grains farmers from 31 different states sharing production insights, the meeting also will feature results of 250 farmer-conducted field trials for crop inputs from nine different companies.

General sessions will include topics such as:

  • Improving returns through grain marketing

  • Plant health and tissue optimization

  • The latest equipment technology

  • Higher yields by unlocking the soil’s full potential

  • And growing a farm’s return on investment.

There will also be break-out sessions on topics such as small-grains production, strip-tilling and intercropping, as well as exhibits of state-of-the-art crop products, production software and field equipment.

The clinic will take place at the Harrah’s Ak-Chin facility near Phoenix, with nearby field trials and demonstration plots made possible through cooperation by the Ak-Chin Native American community. To participate in the clinic, farmers are invited to become members of the Total Acre Interest List and join the program.
